Follow the links on the left-hand menu or below to see examples of some garden apartment complexes in Arlington, Virginia.  Although there are garden apartments throughout the country, we have provided all our examples in Arlington because we live around here and could take pictures of them, and because the garden apartments in Arlington are the first and most important ones in the country.

These garden apartments were a new form of architecture for multi-unit housing.  The examples we provide show the evolution of the form from the smaller complex originially built in the 1930s at Colonial Village to the massive project at Fairlington that was built to house government workers during World War II.

Flowers and buildings

Colonial Village has two- to three-story buildings and planned landscaping.

Buckingham courtyard

At Buckingham, the buildings are similar in size and design, but the color scheme for some is white.

Fairlington building

At Fairlington, there is a much larger variety of building designs.  Also, the landscaping is deemphasized in some areas to allow for roads and more parking.
