Buckingham Garden Apartments

Bounded by George Mason Drive, Henderson, Glebe Road, and Pershing Road.

  • Construction began in 1937 on a 100-acre site.
  • Buckingham was the second garden apartment built in Arlington, VA (after Colonial Village).
  • Used economy of scale based on auto industry economic model.
  • Design and features widely copied.
  • Eleanor Roosevelt visited in 1937.
  • Partially converted to cooperative units in 1981.  Part remains affordable housing.
  • Designated as a local historic district in 1993.
  • Surveyed by Historic American Buildings Survey.
