This website was created in 2007 by students in the library science school at the Catholic University of America for a class on webpage design.  Due to server constraints, the site will not remain active beyond summer 2007, so read up!

The site is meant to be a subject guide to garden apartments.  See the Architecture and History page to find out what exactly is meant by "garden apartments" and where and how to look for lots more interesting facts about their architecture, construction, and importance to the development of low-cost housing in the United States.

We have put together example pages that highlight some notable garden apartment complexes, with photographs.  All of our examples are located in Arlington, Virginia.  The reasoning for that is twofold:  Arlington is where the garden apartment movement in this country first took off and they are some of the best examples around, and because they are near to us geographically so we could take our own photos.

The links page provides access to some general sources for architecture, preservation, and specific garden apartments; most of the links on the other pages are collected here, except for some that pertain to examples, of specific complexes such as Colonial Village, which will only be found on those pages.  You will also find some citations to useful articles on the links page.  Although we are not able to provide hyperlinks to some of these, you should be able to find them by using your local library; use Interlibrary Loan if necessary.

We hope this site will help you recognize garden apartments for what they are--a very interesting part of housing and architectural history.  Once you start looking, you will probably see them in your neck of the woods too!
