How to Read a LC Call Number

Read call numbers one line at a time, from top to bottom and left to right.

1. Begin with the letter or letters. Letters are always read alphabetically (e.g. A, B, C, D, E, ... X, Y, Z.), with single letters coming before double or triple letters.

2. Next are whole numbers, read numerically, that are made up of one or more digits such as 2346 or 81 or 1. Some numbers appear with decimal points such as 384.25 or 1995.2.

3. Next are letter and number combinations, with the letter always coming first.

Example:

  • .A5 = .5
  • .C63 = .63
  • .J35 = .35
  • .R782 = .78
