How to Read a LC Call Number
Read call numbers one line at a time, from top to bottom and left to right.
1. Begin with the letter or letters. Letters are always read alphabetically (e.g. A, B, C, D, E, ... X, Y, Z.), with single letters coming before double or triple letters.
Example:
- H comes before HT
- HT comes before N
- N comes before ND
2. Next are whole numbers, read numerically, that are made up of one or more digits such as 2346 or 81 or 1. Some numbers appear with decimal points such as 384.25 or 1995.2.
Example:
- N3 comes before N43
- N43 comes before N548.4
- N548.4 comes before N1952.4
- N1952.4 comes before N8647
3. Next are letter and number combinations, with the letter always coming first.
- Letters are always read alphabetically.
- The number is read as a decimal (e.g. .2, .24, .29, .35, .35895)
