| Call Numbers - An Introduction
Materials in libraries are organized so that library materials can be found once they have been placed on a
shelf. Each item is assigned a unique code, called a call number, to help with the organization.
- Call numbers are usually made up of numbers and letters.
- Call numbers determine each item's exact location within a library.
- Call numbers make it possible to group materials with similiar topics/subjects together.
Classification systems are the rules used to determine call numbers. Most public and school libraries use Dewey Decimal system. Most research and academic libraries use Library of Congress classification systems.
